Felbertauern (South Side)

 Felbertauern (South Side)

Stunningly beautiful climb in the Iseltal to the Felbertauern tunnel, which connects the province of Salzburg with East Tyrol. The tunnel was completed in 1967. It’s 5.282m long and usually open all year round. The area south and north of the Felbertauern tunnel is a real Mecca for ice climbers and offers more than 100 ice and mixed routes of all lengths and degrees of difficulty. This south side may be longer, but the many flat sections make for a fairly easy ride. The Felbertauern landslide of May 2013 caused the total destruction of approximately 100m of road including an avalanche gallery, generating traffic disruption and several direct and indirect impacts on the regional economy. The Felbertauern road, an important traffic artery for the entire region, was totally blocked for several weeks. A new road was constructed to bypass the destroyed area.
