Portillo De Lunada (North side)
The Portillo de Lunada links San Roque de Riomiera in Cantabria with Espinosa de los Monteros in Burgos, Spain, and it is Cantabria’s third-highest pass. In 2024 the Vuelta a España climbed this side on its penultimate stage to Picón Blanco, where Eddie Dunbar won. Primoz Roglic finished the day in the lead, on his way to a record-equalling fourth Vuelta.
This ride starts at La Concha, at the head of the Miera valley, in one of the three Pasiego towns. Higher up, the road passes the ruins of the Resbaladero de Lunada, a log slide begun in 1791. It sent timber from the Castilian side over the pass and down to the royal cannon foundry at La Cavada. Logs fell 400 m in about two minutes. The ride crosses the pass and ends a short way down the Burgos side.
