The Col de la Madeleine, 1,993 m, links the Tarentaise and the Maurienne in Savoie, France. The way over it was only a mule track until the 1960s: the last 1.5 km to the col were paved in 1967, and the road was inaugurated on 6 July 1969. Two days later the Tour de France crossed it from the side this ride climbs, on the stage from Chamonix to Brianรงon, with Andrรฉs Gandarias first over the top. The Tour has now crossed it 28 times, and it has been rated hors catรฉgorie since 1995.
This ride climbs the whole north side, about 24.5 km on the D213 from near La Lรฉchรจre; it is a more irregular climb than the south side from La Chambre. It passes Celliers, whose hamlets got their first road around 1936, and climbs on to the col. In 2018 the Tour came up this side on the stage to Alpe dโHuez: Julian Alaphilippe was first over the top, and Geraint Thomas won the stage in the yellow jersey.
