Monte Zoncolan rises above Sutrio, in Carnia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, and this eastern side is where racing on the mountain began. The womenโs Giro dโItalia came first, in 1997, when Fabiana Luperini won. In 2003 the menโs Giro finished here for the first time, and Gilberto Simoni won the stage on his way to overall victory. Since then the Giro has mostly climbed from Ovaro, on the other side.
This ride starts below Timau and drops down the But valley through Paluzza to Sutrio, a village known for its woodwork. The climb is 13.5 km at 9%: it rises to the ski area at Rifugio Moro, eases briefly, then saves the steepest for last, 3.5 km at 13% with ramps of 23%. In 2021 the Giro returned to this side. Lorenzo Fortunato joined Jan Tratnik at the front, dropped him 2.5 km from the top and took his first professional win. The ride ends at the summit.
