The Felbertauern road climbs from East Tyrol, in Austria, up the Isel and Tauern valleys to the tunnel under the Felber Tauern, following the old trade route between Matrei and Mittersill. In July 2026 the Tour of Austria climbed this side on its third stage, from Lienz to St. Johann im Pongau; Neilson Powless won from a two-man breakaway, and Gregor Mรผhlberger kept the overall lead.
This ride starts at Huben and climbs to Matrei in Osttirol, which stood on the pack trail over the Felber Tauern. The archbishops of Salzburg ruled Matrei from 1212, and it was a market town by the late 13th century. The road then climbs the Tauern valley past the turn for the Matreier Tauernhaus, a lodge that Salzburgโs prince-bishops built in 1562 for the merchants and muleteers crossing the pass. The ride ends at the tunnel, which replaced the old crossing in 1967.
