Col d’Allos
The Col d’Allos, 2,240 m, links the Verdon and the Ubaye in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France, and the Tour de France has crossed it 34 times since 1911. Its most famous day came in July 1975. Eddy Merckx attacked just before the summit on this side and built a lead of nearly a minute on the descent, then cracked on the climb to Pra-Loup. Bernard Thévenet caught and passed him, took the yellow jersey and kept it to Paris.
This ride starts above Allos and climbs the Verdon valley towards the river’s source, past La Foux d’Allos, where ski lifts were built in 1935. In 2015, forty years after Thévenet’s win, the Tour came back to Pra-Loup, and Simon Geschke crossed this summit alone on his way to his first Grand Tour stage win. The ride ends just over the col.
