Col de Pailheres (East side)
Nestled in the Ariège department within the Occitanie region of south-west France, the Col de Pailhères connects the quiet village of Mijanès in the east to the thermal spa town of Ax-les-Thermes in the west. Ascending to a height of 2,001 meters, it stands out as one of only two road passes in the French Pyrenees to cross the 2,000-meter threshold, sharing that high-altitude status with the renowned Col du Tourmalet. While it made a relatively late debut on the grand stage of professional racing during the 2003 Tour de France, it quickly established itself as a formidable high-mountain sector, renowned for its steep gradients that consistently reach into double digits near the summit.
Beyond its challenging terrain, the Pailhères is celebrated for its pristine natural beauty and tranquil, off-the-beaten-path feel. The ascent transitions from shaded, forested valley roads into an exposed, dramatic alpine landscape above the treeline. Here, tight switchbacks trace the mountainside, rewarding visitors with panoramic views across the sweeping valleys below. With freely roaming horses and cattle often grazing along the upper pastures, the pass possesses a distinctive mountain charm that elevates it into one of the region’s most memorable high-altitude ascents.
