Passo Duran is situated at an elevation of 1601 meters in the Dolomites of the Veneto region, serving as a mountain passage between Agordo to the West and Forno di Zoldo to the East. The pass is positioned in the Southern Dolomites, flanked by the Moiazza massif to the North and the Cima di San Sebastiano to the South. Historically, the pass has functioned as a vital link within the Province of Belluno, providing transit between the Agordino and Val di Zoldo valleys for centuries. The summit area is characterized by high-altitude alpine meadows and sits within the UNESCO World Natural Heritage perimeter, overlooking the Agner and Pale di San Lucano groups to the West and the Pelmo and Civetta massifs to the Northeast.

The pass is a legendary fixture of the Giro d’Italia, first appearing in the 1962 edition and repeatedly utilized as a high-difficulty GPM (Gran Premio della Montagna) climb. Due to its positioning between the more famous passes of the northern Dolomites and the southern plains, it often serves as a tactical pivot point where the general classification is contested. Professional race history at Passo Duran is defined by its ability to fragment the peloton long before the final climb of a stage, as its irregular rhythm and steep pitches favor pure climbers. The route has been the site of significant breakaways and mountain point battles, solidifying its reputation as one of the most demanding and strategically important ascents in the history of the Corsa Rosa.
