Els รngels is the sanctuary hill of the Gavarres massif near Girona, in Catalonia, Spain. From Madremanya, the road up it is short and steep. The Volta a Catalunya crossed the hill on its opening stage in 2023 and again in 2024. Primoz Roglic won the first of those stages and the race. In 2024 Tadej Pogacar finished second on the stage and went on to win the Volta.
This ride starts at Rissec, below Corรงร in the Baix Empordร , and crosses the plain west to Madremanya. The hilltop village still has its medieval street plan and two of its old gates. Beyond the village the road climbs into the cork-oak woods of the Gavarres, among the finest in Catalonia, and passes the sanctuary near the top. The ride ends just over the top, on the first stretch of the Girona side.
