Tour of East Norway, Stage 11 (Gudbrandsdalen)
Gudbrandsdalen is a massive U-shaped valley, carved by glacial activity, that stretches roughly 230 kilometers from the shores of Lake Mjøsa to the base of the Dovrefjell mountains. The valley floor is defined by the Gudbrandsdalslågen river, which flows through a landscape of steep, forested slopes and expansive mountain plateaus. This corridor has served as a central transit route between Oslo and Trondheim for centuries. Its history is visible in the ancient farmsteads and medieval stave churches that remain, reflecting a deep-rooted agrarian culture that has shaped the region since the Viking Age.
The valley’s layout provides direct transitions from the river-level floor to steep mountain climbs, allowing routes to link village centers with high-altitude alpine terrain. This network enables a wide variety of rides, ranging from moderate base-level excursions to strenuous ascents into the surrounding national parks.
