Coll de Femenia
The Coll de Femenia serves as the gateway to the rugged Serra de Tramuntana, marking the point where the gentle agricultural plains of the northeast give way to a dramatic mountain landscape. Its geological foundation is built on ancient Mesozoic limestone, shaped over eons by tectonic shifts and erosion into the jagged karst cliffs and weathered gray crags that define the region. As the path moves southwest, it is flanked by high cliffs to the northwest, while offering sweeping views back to the northeast across the lowlands toward the Formentor Peninsula and the Bay of Pollença.
Long before it became a destination for sport, this pass was a vital link for pilgrims and traders traveling from the coast to the mountain sanctuary at Lluc to the southwest. Today, it has evolved into a classic climb and a cornerstone of the island’s cycling identity, known for its smooth asphalt and wide, sweeping curves that allow for a rhythmic ascent. It famously serves as the first major test for thousands of riders in the Mallorca 312 and Ironman Mallorca, setting the tone for the journey ahead. While it is a recurring feature of the professional Challenge Mallorca, the climb remains a shared space where the massif of Puig Tomir to the south looks down on an endless stream of riders heading westward into the heart of the mountains.
