Passo di Predil
Passo di Predil is a historic mountain crossing in the Julian Alps, serving as a gateway between Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Slovenia’s Soca Valley. The Italian side starts in the town of Tarvisio, winding through the scenic Canal Valley and alongside the crystal-clear Slizza Creek. The landscape is defined by the towering presence of Mount Mangart to the north and Mount Kanin to the south. Historically, this pass was a vital military artery, evidenced today by the ruins of Austrian fortifications and a poignant monument of a dying lion, which commemorates the soldiers who defended the pass against Napoleonic forces in 1809.
Cycling from Italy offers a steady and picturesque journey that passes the stunning Lago del Predil, a cold, emerald-green lake surrounded by dense pine forests. This side is less steep than the Slovenian approach, making it an ideal choice for capturing long, stable shots of the high-alpine scenery and the dramatic peaks of the Cinque Punte. The road is notably wide and historically significant, leading past the old mining village of Cave del Predil. The summit is marked by abandoned border crossings that now feel like an open-air museum, offering a quiet, atmospheric location before the dramatic descent toward the turquoise Soca River.
