Chapelle des Bois
Chapelle des Bois is situated in the Jura Mountains within the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France, positioned near the border with Switzerland. The village lies in a high-altitude valley oriented from the northeast to the southwest, nestled between the Mont Noir massif to the west and the Risoux forest to the east. Historically, the commune developed around a 17th-century chapel, with its economy traditionally rooted in forestry, pastoralism, and the production of Comté cheese within the Doubs department.
The commune is a central node for endurance sports, characterized as the Mecca of cross-country skiing in winter and mountain biking in the summer. The local terrain is a recurring feature of the Transjurassienne, a significant long-distance ski marathon. In professional cycling, the area has served as a passage for the Tour de France during stages traversing the Jura massifs toward the Alps. The terrain utilizes the undulating plateau of the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park to link the departments of Doubs and Jura.
