La Corona loop
The La Corona area is a dramatic geological landscape at the northern tip of Lanzarote, dominated by the extinct Volcán de la Corona. Rising to 609 meters, the volcano erupted approximately 21,000 years ago, creating the expansive Malpaís de la Corona—a rugged "badlands" of petrified lava. This eruption formed one of the world’s longest volcanic tunnels, parts of which have collapsed to create the famous Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. Historically, these subterranean passages provided a vital sanctuary for the island’s indigenous people and later inhabitants seeking refuge from pirate raids during the 16th and 17th centuries.
For cyclists, the region offers a starkly beautiful and serene environment, characterized by quiet roads that wind through ancient vineyards and traditional white-washed villages like Ye. The riding here is defined by long, rhythmic stretches of smooth asphalt that offer panoramic views across the Risco de Famara cliffs toward the island of La Graciosa. Unlike the high-traffic tourist hubs, the northern routes provide a sense of isolation and a connection to the island’s raw volcanic identity. It is an essential destination for those looking to experience Lanzarote’s unique combination of desert-like flora, ocean breezes, and a landscape shaped entirely by fire.
